Mirror, Mirror, on the wall…
Framing a Mirror.

Do-it-yourself Rating: Beginner

Everyone knows how easy it is to decorate a home with framed artwork. An overlooked option that is just as easy, though, is framing a mirror. This is an especially great project for those who want to make their room look bigger, because strategically placed mirrors can visually increase the size of a room by reflecting images and light. This project is very easy, and is one of today's hottest trends in interior decorating.

A word of caution: Mirrors can be very heavy, so it is important to keep this in mind when selecting and hanging your frame. We have chosen the Traditional Gold 8082 frame because of its appearance and because it is a wide strong molding.

Ready? Lets begin!

STEP 1

Apply Marker to Underside of Frame.

Because the mirror is reflective, we need to apply a black marker to the underside of the frame's lip. Be sure not to get the marker on the face of the frame.

STEP 2

Begin Assembly

Carefully lay the frame facedown on a clean work surface and insert the mirror. Place your mounting board into the frame. Using your screwdriver, install spring clips to the frame to hold everything in place. (For our example we used a Point Driver to secure everything in place, due to its ease of use.)

STEP 3

Applying the Dust Cover

Place adhesive transfer tape on the back of the frame and place Kraft paper onto it. Using the Dust Cover Trimmer, carefully trim off the excess paper. To tighten the paper backing, use a spray bottle to mist water on the dust cover and let dry for a few minutes.

STEP 4
Hanging Your Mirror

With your frame still lying face down, install the Hangman. Be careful to use the appropriate length screws so that they don't go through the face of the frame. Attach the wall protectors to the bottom corners and that's it … you have just framed your first mirror.

This photo shows the use of optional corner brackets.

Note: The Hangman mounting system comes with complete installation instructions.

Here are a few tips to help you when framing a mirror.
  • Mirrors are can be very heavy, so it is important that you select a frame that is strong enough to support the weight. We choose the Traditional Gold 8082 because it is a wide strong molding.
  • When the weight of the mirror is a concern we suggest using corner brackets to hold the corners together.
